Skateboard Truck Design
The design and construction of skateboard trucks are very similar between manufacturers. You have your baseplate which is mounted to the deck. The baseplate then holds the kingpin and pivot cup where the hanger connect. The hanger is the part that holds your wheels. The washer and bushings hold everything together with the kingpin nut and provide the mobility.
Where it starts to get technical is the makeup of the trucks. Forged, cast, light, hollow, titanium, low, mid and high trucks with each making a slight difference to your ride.
Finding the Right Size Trucks
When you’re looking at what trucks match up to a deck, there’s a simple rule of thumb. The axle width (the widest point on the truck end to end) should be no wider than your deck. In general for most, an axle width that matches up to your deck width is ideal.
